Frequently asked questions

Is Counselling confidential?

All information disclosed in a session is confidential. The exception to this would be if there was some immediate risk of harm to you or to another person. Where possible, I would inform you first before breaking confidentiality to a third party e.g your GP. Confidentiality will be discussed further and clearly defined during the initial counselling session.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a therapeutic relationship between two or more people. It is an exploration of thoughts and feelings, working through your emotions positively, towards self realisation and self development.

Counselling gives you the opportunity to be heard, time to talk, cry, shout or just think. It is a way to process your feelings and confusions and bring some order into your life.

The relationship between a counsellor and a client is confidential and is based on trust and respect. It is somewhat of a journey through life where upon the counsellor facilitates change that will help you to lead a better more fulfilling life and be more able to understand your feelings and thoughts.

These changes are achieved by helping you to work things out for yourself and not being led by the counsellor or ‘told what to do’ in any way. The changes are made by the you in your own time and in your own way which should help you to cope and manage your feelings in the future. It is a time and place for you to talk about difficult thoughts and feelings in a safe, confidential listening space.

How many sessions will I need?

This will depend on the individual. It is common practice to contract for 6 sessions initially. Some people may need just a few sessions to work through their difficulties, others may need longer. I will discuss with you on a regular basis how you are feel the sessions are going, and make further appointments if necessary.

Where will the sessions take place?

The counselling sessions can take place at my Private Practice in Totnes, Devon in a private counselling room. My counselling room is comfortable and completely private.

I also offer Walk & Talk Therapy as many clients prefer to walk whilst they talk. Some clients find the therapy room restricts change and taking the session outside can release inhibition and be more relaxing.

Do you work evenings & weekends?

Yes. I offer appointments in the evening (weekdays) and on Saturday mornings.

What is CBT?

CBT or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a psychological technique that involves challenging negative thought patterns and unhelpful behaviours. CBT can help with a variety of problems including depression, anxiety, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder and other difficulties people bring to counselling.
